Ali Wong Brought Her Own Personal Experiences To Jentry Chau Vs. The Underworld, But Says Echo’s Experiences Contributed As Well

“It’s very universal what she goes through, but it’s so specific to Echo’s experience and her childhood.”

Screen Rant : Can you babble out about find the right balance of real life and the supernatural ?

Echo Wu : Yeah . I think we want to make the show feel , first and first off , very grounded and very genuine . The end was always to make Jentry feel like she ’s live in our world and not that we ’re in Jentry ’s world . I consider the themes about self - identity descend through a lot in the show . I just wanted to check that it finger like being a teen is scary ; being a teen is scarier sometimes than facing ogre , a little bit . We wanted to play with those emotions and how that feel , hold these bounteous emotions , but also have these self-aggrandizing monster .

Screen Rant : Do you feel like you maybe pulled on your own experiences in middle and high school to land out the voice of Jentry ?

Ali Wong : I experience like I pulled my experience now . I intend , I think it does n’t hold on . Entering a new group of people , that does n’t discontinue when you ’re a kid , at least for me , and so that ’s been find twelvemonth after year . I ’ll always come into a novel radical , and I still feel that jitteriness of , are they going to wish me ? Am I going to check in ? And then that excitation you find when you plug into with someone at a dinner party company , or when you advance someone over , or also that discipline you sense when you do n’t link up with anybody , and you kind of experience like , well , what am I move to do ? Because now I ’m die to be with these people for the next three hours , the next three months , or something , and what am I start to do ?

Or I ’m going to be in this community now , and I have n’t ascertain anybody . I think everyone feels this way . I think it ’s very universal what she run through , but what I jazz about it is it ’s so specific to Echo ’s experience and her childhood . I did n’t grow up in Texas , but this is very much , you may see , it ’s very much Echo ’s show . I did n’t produce up with this making love for anime , but because of Echo , I have make out to do it anime so much , and she ’s stick in me to so many things . It ’s very her .

Echo Wu : I require to give full credit to the plan team , honestly , we had an amazing creature designer on the show that just strike hard it out of the park continuously . We also worked with some amazing pros that are already in the field know for tool design . We looked at a raft of references . The design of the show is already so unique . We look at a lot of old , ancient scroll calligraphy , picture of these monsters . And we ’re like , okay , how do we get a better take on that ?

Jentry Chau vs the Underworld (2024)

Echo Wu : We want something that felt anime remindful , but was n’t entirely what you sleep together that Western anime family . I think Avatar and Vox Machina have a very specific path that they look . I want to go for something different and more unique , but also pay court to anime and Western animation . We look at matter like Over the Garden Wall was a heavy reference . And Gravity Falls is another one . We wanted to toy with what animation reckon like in American invigoration . So it had to be a perfect marriage between the two .

Screen blah : This series is not too scary , but it is chilling enough . Can you talk about finding the good balance ?

Ali Wong : Well , we want it to stay PG because my kids still get scared sometimes watch Home Alone . We wanted this to be that show that parents can enjoy with their kids . There would be multiplication where we would try out to push it , but would be like , Okay , this is too scary , too scary .

Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld

Echo Wu : I still think it ’s very scary .

Ali Wong : It is very scary , but I think my tiddler will be able to handle it . But even , like that experience of when my shaver pulls her blanket over her header and everything , it ’s so sweet . Even though it ’s scary for her , it is very sweet , and I ’m excited to have that with my tiddler while watching this , but to be just enough so that she can continue watch it . Not too chilling that she ’s going to guide to the lav crying and screaming at me , " Why did you make me watch this ? "

Echo Wu : That was me in the conflate elbow room . There ’s one sequence where I was like , " This is too scary . "
