Kate Mara, Sepideh Moafi & Brian J. Smith Talk Class Of ‘09

Screen Rant : What do you remember your character ’s superpower is when it comes to being an FBI federal agent ?

Sepideh Moafi : A superpower that they in reality possess or one that they would want to own ?

We can go with that too ! That ’s a great one .

kate mara, sepideh moafi & brian class of 09

Sepideh Moafi : I think Hour would want to queer the world .

Kate Mara : That ’s a staring solution , really . I think that my graphic symbol , Poet — I do think her sort of superpower — and if more people had this I think it would be a good affair — but empathy is her actual power . It ’s good , and it ’s bad in a hatful of way , and you sort of see that throughout , but she definitely go with her empathy and her lovemaking of masses .

Brian J. Smith : I ’d say , for Lennix , he ’s got a talent for loving mass . It ’s a very specific affair to be capable to really , really , really elevate somebody else above yourself . He really does gather the dear of his life at Quantico , and it ’s a relationship that has ramifications throughout the rest of the narrative for him . I think he has a very unique talent for loving this very specific soul . Maybe that ’s his superpower .

Class of 09 Still 1

Brian , in comparability to other project you ’ve done and other case you ’ve played , what is something that really stands out to you about Lennix ?

Brian J. Smith : It was really fun to get to play with all the unlike timeline . I establish something very be active about look at a someone who ’s in their 50s and attend back like , " How the blaze did I get here ? How did this hap , and what am I go to do about it ? " I witness that to be very exciting . ordinarily , you play your age . Usually , you ’re play someone who ’s look at with the same clustering of issues that you ’re dealing with in some way . So to be able to sort of see myself into the hereafter in a way and enter out what it ’s like to reevaluate and reevaluate your entire life — I come up that to be a luck of fun .

Sepideh , this definitely is n’t your first time exercise within thecrime writing style , so what do you think setsClass of ’ 09apart from other shows that are in this same vein ?

Ashley Poet (Kate Mara) standing at attention in Class of 09.

Sepideh Moafi : It ’s quite unique , tonally . It ’s a suspensive thriller with a sprinkle of sci - fi . As Brian mentioned , we get to see these characters throughout various points in their life and how the decisions they make or do n’t make affect their life story — the ripple effect and the consequences of our human decisions , whether right or wrong . I think there was something deeply vulnerable and raw about Hour and seeing that variety of part , specially in a role like law enforcement , which is n’t common . The people that you see on television system act cops or FBI agent or CIA — they’re always kind of steely and punishing .

The first clip you see Hour , she ’s in a tub , corkscrew out of controller , talking about how she does n’t have money , and she does n’t know why she ’s there . She ’s having an experiential crisis and immediately this trammel , from that moment , is formed between Hour and Poet . Being able to see this chemical group that has this bonding experience and how they stay attached in each other ’s life throughout the decades is something that ’s unique . There are so many dissimilar elements and so many different themes that were attractive to me about this project .

One of them was AI , and one of them was time and the nature of time . One of them was this character with her specific backstory coming from a traumatise Iranian menage that was suppress in their own political science and then dealing with an oppressive legal system that she ’s trying to aid , and she ’s trying to fix , and how , [ just because ] your heart is in a good place , that does n’t always mean that it ’s sound to turn out for the well . These are really real and relatable idea and themes .

Class of 09 Still 6

Kate , you ’ve also play a blanket grasp of roles . Was there anything that surprised you about Poet that you have n’t seen in a function before ?

Kate Mara : The thing about this character that I was excited to explore was , sort of like what Sepi cite , is clip and how it really affects us all in so many way . It affects our relationships so intensely , and I was really intrigued by how Poet ’s relationship with each of these people would be different in the different time periods of her life and how they grow and evolve , or stay stuck in a certain emotional res publica , and just exploring what clock time does to us all . Not just in a strong-arm way , [ but ] in an excited way . That was what was intriguing to me about playing this character and what was different in the hand , as well .

As you ’ve all mentioned , the show jumps around in sentence a lot . As actor , you ’re obviously used to filming out of society , but was there an lend layer of difficulty here to get into your character ’s headspace ?

Class of ‘09

Brian J. Smith : Well , there ’s the physical composition . There were certain days when we would have to go from our present - sidereal day look to our future facial expression . I do n’t hump how long it took you all , but I suppose mine was about two minute to get the old - geezerhood look on . fix into that was difficult .

Kate Mara : I recall it took you three hours because I remember come up onto sic a short morsel after you . You were always there before we get in . That was definitely tricky , but it gave us the fourth dimension to get into that headspace for trusted . There was always a big lump of time between scenes whenever we were startle time periods , so that was useful for us to be able to sort of switch your headspace as well .

Sepideh Moafi : Yeah , but you ’re correct . by from makeup and costume , you do have to be persevering about stick around on top of what stretch out when , what happen where , and where you are within the moral force of the relationships at any give stage throughout the script . Everyone has their process . I wish to have it out in a timeline , but the thing that helped me most was just being on set . There ’s something that your dead body kind of memorizes , and once you ’re on set with those grapheme , something just clicks . As Kate has mentioned before , we kind of rely on each other in a way .
