Ke Huy Quan : Well , ab initio , when I interpret the script , and I was offered the role , I told my agent , " I think they call the wrong hombre . It ’s a skillful playscript , but I do n’t see myself in this character at all . I think they should be calling Jason Statham . He would love to do this . " I ’m a fan of Jason ’s , so I actually passed on it initially , because I just did n’t see myself . And luckily , they did n’t give up on me . They said , " Why do n’t you follow , and we want to let the cat out of the bag to you . " I went , and I met with David Leitch , Guy Danella , our manufacturer , and , of course , JoJo , our director .
And it was then that I realise , " Oh , wow , they are seek to create a unlike kind of action star , not an action principal that we have seen for the last few 10 , but an activeness star that , one , is not afraid to show his emotions , and second , who does n’t seem like a bada– , but he is truly a bada– , and also someone who does n’t need other the great unwashed to believe he ’s a bada– . Ke Huy Quan : I ’ll say this , I play Marvin Gable , who just want to be a normal hombre who love his 9 - 5 job , who is very enthusiastic about finding the great unwashed the perfect home , and his life does n’t scream peril until everything becomes life-threatening . That danger is when Ariana ’s graphic symbol , Rose , comes back into his life and just turns his life sentence upside down .

I roll in the hay you yourself have been involved with stunt work in the past , and apparently , inEverything Everywhere All at Once , you had that awing fanny pack fight succession . What was it likeworking with David Leitchand Jonathan , and the stunt squad at 87North to capture their specific kind of fight style ?
Ke Huy Quan : Well , one of the thing that we agree upon when I come on board was I told them I love the action picture that came out of Hong Kong in the ' 80 . There was something really special about that epoch , and also , there ’s something really limited when you may see it ’s the player doing the fights themselves , and it ’s not a stunt treble . You could clearly see if it was Jackie Chan , or Sammo Hung or Jet Li , it was all them doing it . So , I severalise them , " hear , if I ’m fit to do this , I need to do all the fights myself , every punch , every kick , I need to give them myself . " They go , " We love that . " I said , " Okay , but I need a circle of training because it ’s been a long time since I ’ve done this stage of forcible piece of work . "
We have a great action team led by Can Aydin . And , of course , JoJo and David Leitch , and this is an 87North movie , so this is their expertise . I train with the guy for three calendar month , just getting myself in shape . And also , I know all the move . It ’s very intimate to me , but also , it ’s familiarizing myself with those relocation again . Over the years , they ’ve become muscle retentiveness , but there ’s a difference between what I imagine in my mind versus whether I can still do it or not , because I ’m 53 years old . [ Chuckles ] Luckily — and it ’s something that I ’m very proud about — I was able to do everything myself .
So , that was really cool . And work with 87North has been incredible . They have a really great action squad , and it kind of reminded me of the daylight when I was working for Corey Yuen . Me , along with his guy as assistant action choreographers , was a lot of fun . We made this movie for the hearing who loves this case of picture , so I hope they like it . We ’re very gallant of the movie .
So , with that yesteryear of stunt work and everything , did you get the chance to contribute your own ideas to the fight succession , or did you sort of really trust JoJo and the other coordinators to guide you in what they wanted ?
Ke Huy Quan : It was a very collaborative physical process . One of the things that I learned about fight succession is that it gets boring pretty quickly if the engagement picture does n’t have a story , and if it does n’t enhance the character , like if it does n’t countenance the hearing get more insight into the reference who ’s doing the fighting . So JoJo and I and his action squad , we really seek to — first of all , there are five large action sequences in this movie , and the challenge was each combat scene need to be unlike , and needs to have their own story , and that ’s where that collaboration came in . We talked about , " Okay , so what should this fight chronological sequence be about ? "
It took a recollective clock time to solve out just the tale for the fight , and then it was really Can and JoJo and his team , they ’d go and choreograph , and they would show me it . I would practice , and I would incorporate small note of hand here and there , because I know what I can do . Luckily , over the years , I make out how to make myself seem good doing these fights , because I talk the speech , and then it was them pushing the envelope , really , to see what else we could do . " Oh , so , Ke knows this , permit ’s judge to go in this direction , but fight it even further . " So , I was pushing , and it was a big challenge , and I was very happy for that challenge . I know that you go up against everyone from Marshawn Lynch to Daniel Wu . Given that 87North is very much about the actors doing it themselves , who would you say surprised you the most with how well - fain they come , and well - suited they were , for their choreography .
Ke Huy Quan : Well , one thing is , I ’m really happy that Daniel play my brother , because we have an epical finale engagement chronological succession . He and I speak a very like lyric , he ’s worked in Hong Kong for a long time , he ’s done a lot of action movies . So , when we came together , it was like two pieces to a puzzle , we just synced decent away . The rhythm method , the pacing , we had a pile of interpersonal chemistry between us .
Ariana threw her first punch in this movie , and she storm me , because of how good she throw that punch , there was a lot of big businessman behind that . She threw that poke literally an inch away from the worker ’s human face . I was by the monitor watching , and I was frightened for that actor ’s animation . [ Chuckles ] I went over to Ari , and I said , " Ari , the biff looks great , but it ’s way too faithful . " I really think she was gon na punch him for real . But we did a few takes of it , and she threw that lick with the same speeding , with the same power , and it was just like an inch from them , so I was very surprised how good she is .
And Marshawn Lynch , oh , my God . Let me tell you , one of the shivery things in lifetime is when you see Marshawn Lynch total for you at full f number , and there ’s nothing stop over him . He ’s incredible . I really enjoyed working with everybody .
I love that . And as a Seattle Seahawks fan , I ’m a large Marshawn Lynch lover , so I hump how you involve to get out of his way when he ’s running !
Ke Huy Quan : I ’ll tell you this floor , Grant . There was a shot , and the tv camera is about 20 feet away . I ’m supposed to , on action , get a two - 2d head start and scarper towards the tv camera as fast as I can , and Marshawn is suppose to catch up to me , snaffle my berm and extract me back . The tv camera is only 20 foot aside , and I ’m get a two - second head word head start , and I tell , " Guys , there ’s no direction Marshawn is going to enamour up to me , the distance is way too light . I have too much of a lead . It ’s not gon na operate . "
Marshawn says , " Ke , do n’t care , I ’ll catch you . " I said , " No , no , no , no , no , it ’s not gon na work . " He enounce , " Ke , trust me , I ’ll captivate up to you . " cast camera , legal action , and I ran as tight as I could , and sure enough , aright before I get to the photographic camera , he was there . I mat up this vast hand on my shoulder , grabs me and yanks me back , and I go , " Wow , that ’s dissolute . That ’s scary . " [ Laughs ] Marshawn is incredible . I fuck him so much , he ’s the sweetest man .
Quan Hasn’t Heard Anything About His MCU Future (But Is Ready For The Call)

My team would kill me if I did n’t at least ask , have you heard anything aboutO.B. coming back yet for the MCU ? Because I screw I ’m truly hoping to see more of you in that universe .
Ke Huy Quan : Oh my gosh , I do it that fiber . I remember study him on the page , and he just jumped aright off of it . I was so happy , and I feel so prosperous to be able to play him . Also , when the series come out , you ’ve got to understand , we could n’t promote it because we were on strike , the worker ’s strike . So , I did n’t get to talk much about it then . But when the show debuted , people really loved this persona . And I remember ask Kevin Feige before I did this , I said , " Is this going to be a one - prison term thing ? "
He said , " Ke , if the audience loves O.B. , we ’ll contribute him back . We always give the fans what they desire . " So , I have n’t gotten the call yet , but I ’m expect , just like everybody . Fingers cover , but meanwhile , here ’s the thing , Love Hurts comes out a week before Valentine ’s Day . This is a Valentine ’s movie . I ’m extremely gallant of it , it ’s a fun film to bring your particular date , your lady friend , your booster , so please go patronise it when it comes out . It would mean the existence to me .
