Screen Rant attend the press day for Cloak and Dagger and had the chance to chat with Olivia and Aubrey , where we discussed what it felt like when they found out they got the roles , what themes Cloak & Dagger will cover throughout the series , and what they see for their characters in the future tense .
Q : Can you talk a little flake about the fervor factor as actors to get involved with something that has Marvel ? It must be passably good , but then also just being super larger-than-life characters must also be kind of a cool thing to get to do . Can you talk about when this project follow your way , your sort of emotional reactions ?
Aubrey : It ’s kind of something you do n’t even dream of , just as an player , you know . Just for me , I was in acting school at the time and kind of hoping for a lead persona . But hop , you sleep together , that was a steady show , a perhaps a guest asterisk office , or anything like that . And then Marvel number along . So , yeah , you ca n’t say no to the audition and you just desire that it go well . So just being a superhero , but also being a part of a show like this , that stand for so much , and has such a potent message is unadulterated . It ’s like the perfect place . So just honored and ready for you guy wire to see it .
Olivia : Yeah . I think not only , well one , being a part of the Marvel Universe is like insane . It ’s so surrealistic . And I call back we ’re both so thankful to be a part of the family now . But yeah , this show it digest for so much and I think it ’s not just about the super heroical squad that they are . But it ’s also about them as human beings and individual and the affair that they go through in reality . Which I think is so of import and so humanist to what this show work . I consider that sort of divide it . It makes it stand out a bit .
Q : In the first few episodes alone the show tackle really heavy subjects like sexual assault , the shooting of an unarmed black man . What does it think to you to bring these real life issues to life sentence in this risible book show ?
Olivia : So crucial . I mean , I finger like it ’s very rarefied that you see on television a show tackling such gravid topics , right ? I intend it does . It focuses on intimate violation , police barbarity , addiction , and so much more . The fact that we ’re doing that in such an effortless way , in an organic way , also in an honest raw way is so important for us . Especially because we ’re young and able to be in a situation where we get to expend our voices and our political program to tell a history that ’s so honorable . And I think ultimately that ’s what we require for this show . To not just think of people , but move them and affect them in a direction that ’s go to push the polish , and change the game for as many as we can .
Aubrey : And it ’s essentially important right now , just because , I was just differentiate Liv this , you have two mathematical group of multitude , like ignominious men have been entirely dehumanise in our medium , in society period . And women are always understate . You know , they always have to warrant that they get equal pay or expect to be represent as equal . So we really have this show that brings world to these two radical of mass , and it ’s just sentence . It ’s time for this to fall out and I intend this is gon na just jumpstart the raw normal .
Q : The ethnic conversation kind of shifted this elbow room last fall . Where you bozo already at work on the show , when all of a sudden everybody was spill about the issues that the show is tackling ?
Olivia : Yeah . We started shooting in the closing of July . We started pre - production at the ending of July and then we really started shooting in August . And so everything , the movements was sort of happening and a lot was actually come about when we were down in New Orleans . And it sort of give us view . And I imagine we were in a very new headspace just because of that . And I call up for us , we became even more passionate about the stories and the journey that Tyrone and Tandy were on . The journeying that they were on together but also as someone . And I think it decidedly made a difference and an impact on us . And I call up it made us palpate like we were actually doing something to interchange society a little minute . And to also help people take in position on the situations that are going out . And I almost feel like we see the hereafter a picayune bit . Because some of the stuff and nonsense that was written was come about , and that was a little eldritch . But at the same metre it ’s the staring timing for a show like this to be come out . So that was a very strange place . But in the best way possible I infer . Because now we have the opportunity to tell the that story .
Q : Being on fix in New Orleans , how does that help with the tone of the show and how does that help you as histrion get into the headspace of your role ?
Aubrey : New Orleans in itself is a role on the show , you have it off . It ’s , I do n’t be intimate if you ’ve seen it , but it ’s literally , undeniably there , you ca n’t miss it . New Orleans has beautiful architecture , it ’s a beautiful metropolis . It has beautiful people , a lot of account . So even just give-up the ghost out there myself , it was an honour as my first clip out there . New Orleans is a city that always fights and like never loses that fight in them . I recollect that speaks a lot to who Tyrone and Tandy are . No matter what the world throws at them , they fly high and keep push . So I think just that sense of never losing promise . It ’s huge for our show . vast , enormous .
Olivia : I also suppose cinematically and stylistically it was gorgeous .
Q : It ’s interesting for comics fans , because these characters are not huge name characters in comics , but they in spades have a rooter following and have had been around I think for like 30 years . So it ’s coolheaded to see them in live action for the first time . How much did you kind of delve into source material for this ? And did you witness anything helpful in there in bringing to the show ?
Olivia : I was very unfamiliar with the comics before even going into the sense of hearing operation . We also knew very little give out into it . Information that they apply us was like-
Aubrey : Scenes . Literally .
Olivia : I imply I personally experience like I necessitate to record the first comic , even if the origin tale was a little piece different , just to sort of understand the tone and where Tandy and Tyrone fall from . What their power even are . So that avail a little bit . And then once we actually booked the percentage it was pretty epical . Our hair and war paint laggard actually had Cloak and Dagger funnies plastered all over the walls . So while we were getting quick for the shooting day , we would just have like a fun fiddling read . But you know , I ’ve meet a luck of people who are buff of the strip . They still seem pretty delirious to see the differences a little fleck because , you get laid , like you say , it ’s been around for 30 addition years , started in the previous eighties , early 1990s and it was perfect for that time . But I think changing it up a little bit and make it more current and peach about , again , topics that are happen right now in 2018 . I intend makes it a little bit more relatable and I palpate like the audience is going to colligate to it in a mode that they would n’t if it was establish in a unlike geological era or even if they were run short through thing that were happening back then . But now since we ’re sort of focalise on something that ’s a lilliputian more current and spill the beans about what it ’s like to be a untried disgraceful male person in America in 2018 and what it ’s like be a untried white female person , in American in 2018 . We ’re excited about because we get to story tell and a originative way . But also in a manner that it ’s not just impacting the audience but impacting us as well .
Q : In do school they can instruct you to cry on cue , but they do n’t teach you about powers . How to play powers .
Olivia : Is n’t that is a bummer , correct ?
Q : How did you wrap your head around how you were going to act out the abilities knowing that CGI was go away to help you at some spot , but you ’ve got to picture it out on camera how it ’s going to “ look . ”
Olivia : We had a pretty epic squad that helped us . I think as far as like , because we knew manifestly a lot of the effects were locomote to materialize in post yield . Our special effects team definitely helped us within that function . That mode we did n’t under - act or over - act . I cogitate it was definitely helpful . But , I do n’t know , I think it ’s a feeling that you just feel in the minute . And I remember also depending on the scene , the energy that ’s there , whether it ’s , you know , it ’d be a mood that one of us are in . If it ’s angry or if it ’s just wanting world power , if it ’s require , you know . There ’s got to be an aim behind why we use our powers , right ? So I intend it just always depends what the fit was . But as far as cope with the powers that was the interesting part . Because we ’re not going to be badass from the get go . We have to learn , grapple , how to share with all those force . And that ’s also one thing that I found so fun and interesting and intriguing about these specific characters . Is that they ’re not just learning how to deal with real adolescent sprightliness stuff . They ’re also get a line how to cope with powers on top of all of it . So they have a spate on their plate . But , I mean , I remember for me anyway with the daggers at one point in the show , you jazz , I have to teach how to in reality fight with them and throw them . And I worked with a magician for a match of time of day one day who taught me how to grow card into like a hat . Which was like how I ascertain how to throw the daggers , which is moderately epic . And you had so much cardio . I do n’t know how you-
Aubrey : Yeah , I had a lot of basketball . I had a lot a , one matter just to talk about what she said , we ’re not stimulate them be so badass . At first , I remember we would always go into stunt rehearsal and have these crazy like fight view and then they would be like , “ Nah , telephone dial that back down . ’
Olivia : Yeah , we ’d want to kvetch ass and they ’d be like , “ You ca n’t do that . induce you do n’t know how to do that yet . ”
Aubrey : And I experience like that was the looker of it as well . They do n’t teach superhero acting , but they do teach “ act is live on truthfully under fanciful destiny . ”
Olivia : Ooh . I sense like it ’s what you do as a kid too .
Aubrey : Right . You just playact like you have power .
Olivia : Yeah the trading floor is lava at all times .
Aubrey : Right . ( LAUGHS )
Q : The account that have a male and female at the heart , you pretty much always root for them to get together quickly . Is that something that you require to see happen for these characters or do you desire them to stay as platonic partners and friends ?
Olivia : I know in the comedian they were lovers , which was interesting . But I think at first we desire to do a little fleck of lineament development . Show who they are as individuals and also show the comradeship and loyalty and trust that they have as friend . Because their family relationship is very complicated . As I ’m sure some of you guys have seen already , like it ’s not an comfortable kinship . They ’ve already gone through so much . You know , they already have a slew on their plate and everything is overwhelming and shivery and they also do n’t desire to show those face , but then do . I imagine that they ’re just like- ( COUGHS )
Aubrey : Just to utter off what she ’s enjoin . hold back , I ’m so sorry , what are we talking about again ?
Q : Do you want to see them get together on the show ?
Aubrey : I ’m so in lovemaking with their friendship right now and just the fact that they require each other . You ’re that one person that they can literally talk about anything . That ’s what I ’m obsessed with right now . I do n’t know about the whole lovemaking matter yet . Yeah . mayhap . Maybe in later season .
Q : Looking forward into the future . Obviously on the self-aggrandizing cover the MCU had the big Infinity War . Now that you bozo are on TV , are you guys looking forrard to , or possibly even thinking about , you guys are about the same long time as The Runaways , a little squad up over there . Any crossover there ?
Olivia : Sorry . I almost died just then . ( LAUGHS ) We trust so . I sense like if there is going to be a crosswalk , it will be with The Runaways . It ’s just because it makes more sensory faculty and we also love them as just a casting .
Aubrey : We just saw them last nighttime .
Olivia : I think it would just make a stack , and I intend they also cross over in the comics . Hopefully there ’ll be an chance there somewhere . We ’ll see .
Q : Was there like a real test for you guys as role player ? A scene or a chronological succession that you ’re like , “ Okay , we ’re in it now . This is a real challenge . ”
Aubrey : Of course . The panorama in the church building . I find like almost every scene we had in the church was an actors stratum . It was all about being invest in each other . And it was credibly one of my favorite installment to shoot just because we were so invested in . And I finger like we did some of our good acting work all time of year in the episode too .
Olivia : I also cerebrate it really , I think of in that fourth instalment where Tanny and Tyrone finally hash it out and you have intercourse , they get a chance to really verbalize from their not just headspring but with their hearts . And what they find like they ’ve been experiencing over their life . I think it ’s such an intense situation and the fact that they get to really confide in each other in that . And I think both of us felt really passionate about where their head space is , where as well . I think almost the Olivia and Aubrey were really speaking in those moment as well . And I commemorate at the end of that day we were both just like so heated and exhausted and it just , it was , it was a moment that I think we both genuinely feel powerful . And it ’s one of those move moments that you read it and you ’re like , “ whoa . ” But then you do it and you ’re like , “ WHOA ” Yeah . It was emotionally and physically exhausting , but I imagine that present moment in particular we felt like we had a show that was a plot modifier . And that ’s just me being cocky . ( LAUGHS )
Q : give thanks you !
