Star Wars : Skeleton Crew is the next television set show to be released in the franchise , and its place in the Star Wars timeline is quite interesting .
Alongside Law , theensembleStar Wars : Skeleton Crewcastincludes Ravi Cabot - Conyers , Ryan Kiera Armstrong , Kyriana Kratter , Robert Timothy Smith , Tunde Adebimpe , Kerry Condon , Nick Frost , Marti Matulis , Jaleel White , Fred Tatasciore , Mike Estes and Dale Soules . Ahead of the show ’s premiere , Screen Rantinterviewed Jon Watts and Christopher Ford to discussStar warfare : Skeleton Crew , how the show fits into the largerStar Warstimeline , some of the enigma that will drive its plot forward , namely Law ’s Jod , their efforts to do everything as practically as potential , and building out the young cast .
Skeleton CrewWill Be Full Of Easter Eggs For The WiderStar WarsUniverse
The Show Will Also Have Certain Timeline Connections, But Is Still “More Of A Standalone”
Screen Rant : We first saw the conception of blank pirate ship in bouncy - action duringThe Mandalorianseason 3 . Did that help set the stage forSkeleton Crew , or was that something that was contrive after the fact ?
Jon Watts : No , that was a big part of what steered it in that way . We knew that we wanted the kids to get lose in a crazy , disorderly galax , and we always imagined pirates would be a part of it . But because Jon [ Favreau ] and his squad had already embark on developing that world , it was fun to take that and just sort of trial with it .
Chris Ford : He was so worked up about it that it was almost like , " Do you need to check out my newfangled toy ? look into this out ! depend what you could do . " He was just really activated to pass it along to us .

Why did you guys choose for the show to be a part ofthisStar Warstimeline , and how deep ingrained inThe Mandalorianera ?
Chris Ford : Yeah , our report is a bit more of a standalone composition , but there are connections there . And for us , it felt really natural . We were looking for a part in the whole Star Wars timeline when even kids could go get suffer in the Galax urceolata . If you ’re in the High Republic time , you ’re going to get scooped up by some hero Jedi in about five bit savourless . Basically , we were attend for that time period because it was a niggling more chaotic . The New Republic is there , but they ’re not needfully all - potent yet , so there ’s room for pirates and danger .
Jon Watts : Yeah , it ’s kind of the worst time to be a kid . You have to think , " What will be the spoiled thing ? "
I want to talk about the major planet , Atatten real quick . It ’s rumour to be the jewel of the Old Republic , and it has an eternal gem . What else can you tell us about the planet and the great work that ’s being done there ?
Chris Ford : That ’s what ’s fun about it . The kids spring up up there . It ’s peaceful , it ’s nice , and they do n’t like that because they ’re bored . But if you ’re in Tattooine , or you ’re in the middle of a engagement , you would love to go to this planet . So , it ’s about that difference in perspective . We know that ’s a theme of Star Wars : if you look at things from a certain point of view , what ’s the actual economic value there ?
Jon Watts : There ’s decidedly more to the satellite than meet the eye , but we do n’t desire to say too much .
Skeleton Crewfeels kind of something rare inStar Warsbecause it ’s a standalone story , and you do n’t need to have it away a muckle of the lore . But for devotee that love this dealership profoundly , are there Easter bollock that you may tease for eagle - eyed lover to spot ?
Jon Watts : There are a gross ton of Easter eggs . On top of that , there ’s this interesting affair where , if you love a lot about Star Wars more than these nestling do , it allow for you to follow their journey from a unlike linear perspective . You see the mistakes they ’re making and the noesis that they do n’t have , and it deepen the way you enjoy and know the episodes . I ’m excited to see a person who bed nothing about Star Wars and a mortal who bang everything about Star Wars watch this together to see how they love it .
Watts & Ford “Tried To Do Everything” Practically For The Show
“There’s no way to fake that.”
The Volume has been utilise a lot late , but this show felt almost like a reversion where everything was done in - camera in that old - schoolStar Warsway . Can you talk about some of the technique you used to bring this man to life ?
Jon Watts : Yeah . We tried to do everything . I had this goal of trying to do every single proficiency in that original ILM Holy Scripture that demonstrate how they made the films . We did as much as we could practically . We did use The Volume ; we did use apparent motion capture and facial capture , and all form of things . But we also used stop - motion , we had animatronics , we had puppets , and we had matte painting . Models , a luck of miniature , and motion control .
Really , the main cause behind it all is that it ’s super fun , and it ’s right smart more fun to do stuff for veridical than to just take care over someone ’s berm as they ’re doing it on a computer . But for the kid , it ’s so much more immersive to have them be in a genuine environment interacting with a real puppeteer droid and a existent animatronic stranger . The saying you see on their typeface as they ’re experiencing that ? There ’s no elbow room to fake that .

BuildingSkeleton Crew’s Cast Proved To Be A Unique Thrill For Watts & Ford
“We saw some really good actors, which was hard enough.”
I love all the characters in this show , but I want to commence withJude ’s character . What did he bring to that character that choke beyond the page ?
Chris Ford : Just from the very starting time , when we first cope with with him , he got what we want to do , which was to dig in and make that character really nuanced and genuine . We wanted him to find like he was pull from the traditional knowledge . He had so many story and backstories , and the thing he had gone through that were all weighing on him , and you could see it . So , we had to talk about it and sympathise this backstory for him .
Jon Watts : Yeah , we indite him as a very mysterious character , and then what Jude brought to it was these layers of complexity and a backstory that you do n’t necessarily find everything out about . But you ’d sense it in every moment of his carrying out .

I screw Wim because he reminds me of myself as a nestling . He ’s fantasizing about being a Jedi , and he really projects that hoagie image onto Jude ’s character . Can you sing to me about what they larn from each other throughout the series ?
Chris Ford : Without giving too much by , I believe Jude ’s part is in this weird place where he has n’t been cling out with a bunch of kids . For him , it ’s almost a nostalgic matter now that he ’s with these kids , so he ’s connecting with that part of himself that he had maybe keep out down to be a tough guy cable and survive in the wandflower . They ’re vulnerable ; they ’re naive . They are all these thing that he would consider of as unsound , but he discover how lively they are and how powerful their imagination is . And at the same time , the kids are memorize a lesson from him . Sometimes the lesson you learn from the real world are scarey at first or kind of intense , but they make you a better person .
Jon Watts : Yeah , I think Wim is learning that the world is n’t quite as dewy-eyed as just good guys versus bad guys .

Can we spill the beans about SM-33 ? Nick Frost is grotesque as SM-33 .
Jon Watts : He ’s a cranky old pirate droid who ’s basically the spoiled baby-sitter that a group of tyke could ever have .
Chris Ford : His first instinct is to bedevil them out the airlock . [ Laughs ]
Jon Watts : Yeah , and it was fun having Nick do it because we had him show as much of it as we possibly could beforehand . So when we were on set , there would be someone puppeteering the droid and another person spark all the dialogue . Everyone is actually tattle and interacting with Nick Frost ’s voice come out of this droid . It was really fun .
We also get to meet a really cool type named Kim . I do n’t desire to spoil anything that go on there , but she kind of tells KB something at the ending of episode 3 . How important is that connection , and how do we see that mentorship wave throughout the serial publication ?
Jon Watts : Yeah , I think I sleep together Kim as a character , and her connexion with KB is very specific . It ’s almost like when a bright kid run across another chic kid , and they become acquaintance . She picks KB out as someone who can understand what she ’s trying to tell the rest of the kids , and maybe the other kids are n’t able to be in the same manner .
These kids are howling . Talk to me about puzzle out with them and what they play to their roles that went beyond the page as well .
Jon Watts : That was part of the cast process . We waited a long time to feel kids that were [ not just ] great . So many kids that we saw were great .
Chris Ford : We view some really good actors , which was severe enough .
Jon Watts : You just sort of wait for the character reference to take the air through the doorway . Because something that I got to talk to Richard Donner about before he died was casting in Goonies . You do n’t cast Kyd to work ; you disgorge kids because of who they are . Once we had discover our four characters , we went back and look at all the scripts . After expend time with the Kid , we rewrote everything so that it matched who they were in actual life , to bring things from their lives , and put that into the reference , so it became a petty bit more of a dialogue .
