Black Christmas
Black Christmastakes a sorority slasher film – some would say the founding Church Father of slasher celluloid – and turn it into a horror movie about the bonds of sisterhood . The remake , out in theaters now , explores the same assumption as the original but with a Me Too - style twirl . Director Sophia Takal spoke with Screen Rant about her motivations in crafting the message behind the film and the support she receive from Blumhouse Productions .
Great line of work on this flick . I love the message that it send out and that song . I do n’t require to scotch it , but that song is smart as a whip . I want to inquire you about the song first : how did you guys add up up with that ? Who wrote the lyrics ?
Sophia Takal : Riki Lindhome , do you know who that is ? She ’s a really wonderful player and writer and Isaac M. Singer . We were prosperous enough to have her save the lyrics for the song .
For me , I want that import to be a moment where our primary quality Riley is tired of hiding behind the walls she ’s put up because of past trauma and find intensity with her sisters to get out there and mouth her voice and have it experience like a moment of triumph for our main character . I want something that was fun and cheeky , but also had a little bit of a message . I think that ’s kind of the spirit of the moving picture in general , fun and cheeky and exciting and fresh .
Absolutely . Also , this movie ’s ahead of the curve because I do n’t really cogitate you see - in front of the tv camera or behind the tv camera - so much female empowerment . Can you speak to me about bring that element to this version ofBlack Christmas ?
Sophia Takal : Yeah , I was really inspire by the original Black Christmas . I think that film has extraordinarily complex , exciting female case , and so I want to bring a movie to the screenland that reflected that kind of freshness in 2019 .
Blumhouse is killing the game with revulsion movies . Can you talk to me about the coaction of working with them ?
Sophia Takal : I be intimate do work with Blumhouse . They ’re an incredibly supportive , filmmaker - favorable fellowship . They really helped guide the process and make helped me make the best version of this movie potential , without essay to make it something different that I did n’t want it to be . They did n’t shy aside from what might be considered the more controversial things about the film . They were really excited to to make a movie from a female stop of eyeshot .
I think that ’s something they do so well : societal commentary with their films . I think it ’s brainy . Something else that I loved about this flick , too , is that most films that have a lot of distaff quality ordinarily pit them against each other . This one is really about sisterhood , the bond paper of sisterhood and coming together . Can you talk to me about that element of the film as well ?
Sophia Takal : Yeah . I have made a few film where cleaning lady were mark against one another . And I felt like over the preceding few year , I ’ve unquestionably feel a mother wit of camaraderie amongst women grow and exposit and I want to make a moving-picture show that was reflective of that . I intend , right now , women are hail together and find strength together and that their voices are more herculean when they ’re multiply .
A batch of repulsion films can be take care at as cautionary fib . What are you hoping audiences take off from this translation ofBlack Christmas ?
Sophia Takal : I really hope interview , first and first of all , have a really fun and shuddery time watching the movie . And I hope that they allow for the theater and talk about what their experiences are like as men and fair sex , and perchance the ways we do n’t see eye to eye or the ways that we do .
Talk to me about some of the influence that you may or may not have used from the originalBlack Christmasand then the remake with Lacey Chabert .
Sophia Takal : I think the tone of the archetype was something that was really important for me to capture in 2019 . In making the movie , we had a pile of 70s cinematic references and we used a lot of the weapons that are in the original ; that the killer uses . But this fourth dimension the women handle those same weapon system , which was kind of a fun small wind . And really just make certain to respect the original by making this movie find as flesh out and refined as that moving picture did at the time .
