While waiting for update on therenewal condition ofThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 4,Screen Rantinterviewed Dailyn Rodriguez about multiple percentage of the show , including her cognitive operation of adapting the novels , her experience drop a line a Latinx story , and what to expect if Netflix picks the show up for another time of year . Though she remained tight - lipped about spoilers , Rodriguez mirthfully teased exciting things to number .

Rodriguez Strives To Modernize The Books Without Losing Their Essence

“Our challenge is to keep as much as we can of Michael’s books, and if we can’t, we at least want to keep the spirit of what was in Michael’s books.”

Screen Rant : I imagine there ’s a lot of pressure adapting such a dear book serial . How do you and your co - showrunner resolve what to keep and what to switch from the Book ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : We do a couple things . One is we make indisputable that we sort of take care at the Quran holistically when it was drop a line and when we ’re adapting it . So , for example , in time of year 2 , in that book , which was The Fifth Witness , it took place right on in 2008 during the living accommodations crisis . We could n’t retroflex that . So , we seek to discover a affair that variety of felt comparable and sort of keep the essence of what that was , and that ’s why we came up with the whole idea of gentrification and a developer . So , we kept it in the world of tangible demesne and the same kind of stakes of something like that . But that ’s how we sort of adapted that .

The good news about the Gods of Guilt , which was season 3 , is that one matte less of a time . That one mat up more specific . Even though at the last of [ The Law of Innocence ] , the pandemic originate rear forrader towards the end of the ledger . So , we sort of went away from that . Which does n’t matter , you do n’t really demand it . The things that we have to change is because his books have big time jumps between them , and we begin – we do these cliffhangers . So , we start up pretty quickly . So , sure things we have to change that make sentiency to sort of conform them in a more present time .

For example , in the book , Hayley is not mouth to Mickey because of something completely unrelated . Something happen before the Holy Writ when he has a case and there ’s a DUI and a guy make out because he helps him get out , and that guy ends up shoot down somebody that ’s the mother of a friend of hers . So that ’s why you prevent talking to him .

So we want to keep the essence of her not talking to him anymore . So , we deepen it to be able to keep that part of the book , but make it more integral to how we ’re breaking the report . So , that ’s sort of how we changed it . And also , we had to alter sure things . We had to sort of reinvent the detective character and make him this young character to an extent . We could n’t expend Langford because of the means they had to apply Langford in season one . So sure thing we just have to shift , but our challenge is to keep as much as we can of Michael ’s book , and if we ca n’t , we at least want to keep the spirit of what was in Michael ’s books , if that makes sense .

Rodriguez Loves Getting To Show The Various Sides Of Latino Culture In The Lincoln Lawyer

“It’s very important that we show all aspects of Latinos and embrace that part of LA and not just Mexican.”

Screen Rant : How does it feel for you as a Latinx someone to tell an authentically and unapologetically Latinx story in The Lincoln Lawyer ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : It ’s one of my favorite things about the show is that we ’re capable to tell not only a story about Mickey Haller being Latino and living in LA , but LA being a very Latinx urban center . It ’s almost 50 % Latino . And so , to me , it was very important , and we do it a lot in season 2 . We also do it in season 3 because Michael Erbe is Afro - Latino and Yaya is Afro - Latina , and we have other character that are Latino on the show .

To me , it ’s very important that we show all aspects of Latinos and cover that part of LA and not just Mexican . Everybody lives in LA , and whether they speak Spanish or they do n’t talk Spanish , or they have an emphasis , or they do n’t have an speech pattern , do you know what I entail ? All of it , because we ’re not a monolith .

Maggie and Mickey are in a courtroom in Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer

So to me , perfectly , and it ’s really authoritative to me to have him be this professional , passing good at his job , smart Isle of Man in Los Angeles and still keep – we call it Latinidad . His Latin - cape is so intact , but it ’s not all that he is . He ’s so much more than that . So , to me , it ’s the way I finger like it ’s the best style to sort of move forward in the way that we tell Latin stories . We ’re just part of the American fabric , and we move through these communities in a specific way , but still as Americans .

Lorna And Mickey Both Have Big Challenges Ahead In The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4

“I don’t think it’s going to be good enough for him to get not guilty.”

Screen Rant : One of the liberal spot inThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 3 was Lorna becoming a attorney . What is her character arc blend in to look like now that she has that under her belt and open those doors ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : Yeah , I mean , I conceive the big thing , you view how we finish the time of year with Mickey . Mickey ’s become to be accused of slaying .

Screen Rant : I ’m weirdly excited about that .

Mickey Haller smiling in The Lincoln Lawyer season 2, episode 10

Dailyn Rodriguez : You and everybody else seems really aroused about this . So yeah , time of year 4 is The Law of Innocence , and she ’s his married person . So , this is the most stressful , big case of all their lives . And she ’s a green attorney . She ’s green . So it ’s just enter out how much she can take on , what place she has in the role of co - counsel with him , and also keep the line of work afloat while he ca n’t take any other clients in jail . You do it what I mean ? I mean that you ’re go to see a Lorna that has a lot of musket ball in the air and seek her good to keep all of those balls in the melodic line and be successful at it . I think that ’s where we ’re pass away with her .

Screen Rant : Is Mickey break to confront the site from behind bars , or is he start to get out ? Can you tell me ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : I ca n’t really tell you that . That ’s a coddler .

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Becki Newton in The Lincoln Lawyer featured

Screen Rant : On that bill , how , as a character , is Mickey drop dead to handle being criminate of murder ? He seems like a very just person , and that ’s a very unjust position .

Dailyn Rodriguez : I mean he continues being who Mickey is . I do n’t call back it ’s going to be good enough for him to get not hangdog . He want to be innocuous . And how do you get that ? How do you get the cite of innocence when he keeps telling people , " I ca n’t get you clean-handed ; I can get you a not hangdog " ? How does Mickey get impeccant ?

I think that that ’s the expectant matter he will have to present in season 4 because , to him , it ’s not going to be good enough to be not guilty because it ’s his reputation . And , to him , everything is his reputation and how it affect his family , his coworkers , his friends , everybody . At the end of the day , everybody ’s kind of qualified on him . So , it ’s important for him to keep this reputation that he ’s built as one of the good vindication lawyer in Los Angeles .

Eddie stands in the car door during The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 episode 5

The Lincoln Lawyer Showrunners Achieved Their Goal With Eddie’s Season 3 Death

“We had five episodes to create a character that everybody fell in love with, and then we pulled the rug out from under them.”

Screen Rant : learn the fan reactions to season 3 , do you regret killing Eddie off ? Because everybody loves him .

Dailyn Rodriguez : We did the job ! We did it . I signify , it ’s frightful , but I love it because we did what we needed to and what we put out to do . We had five episode to create a character that everybody fell in love with , and then we pulled the rug out from under them .

And we had to do it because it ’s a pivotal news report point in the Holy Writ . In the book , there ’s a different reason why Hayley ’s not utter to Mickey , so we needed to come up with something that was more personal and that made sentiency to the story . That ’s why we created this brand Modern fibre that does n’t live in the book of account .

Mickey from The Lincoln Lawyer is in front of a highway.

Also , sometimes I see him as a piddling bit of Mickey Jr. , or if Mickey had more loving and caring parent . We really want to create a young form of Latino Gen Z character , somebody that find really innovative and real to us . He ’s a raw kind of Latin valet that I think is out there , and that you do n’t see very often on television . We were excited to bestow that , and the player who play Eddie is kind of similar to the persona , so it fit out .

The Lincoln Lawyer Showrunners Have Exciting Plans For Season 4

“I just really hope we get a season 4 because I think people will love it.”

Screen Rant : Okay . At the end ofThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 3 . Andy seems very questioning of the prosecutor ’s office and her role in it . What can we bear going into season four with that trepidation that she has ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : I think we ’re going to zoom out in general from – I think the next time of year is a little bit of a underage protraction from the approximation of a lot of sh*t is corrupt . Do you know what I entail ? Yes . As Mickey is facing his own mortality and his own freedom and innocence , I think it ’s a window into more of that . I ca n’t really speak to the particular of Andrea , regrettably .

Screen Rant : ScreenRanttalked to Ted Humphrey about this , but can you share anything about your program on how to handle Bosch ’s absence seizure ?

Headshot Of Manuel Garcia-Rulfo

Dailyn Rodriguez : Yeah , it ’s just unfortunate because we do n’t own that character . Netflix did n’t own the fibre , so we ca n’t do any crosswalk . I would be giving a looter if I tell you what we were going to do , but we decidedly have an idea of how we can bring in someone else that could toy the Bosch in a future time of year .

Also , we kind of are just give way Cisco more to do . We give the characters that we have a lilliputian bit more to do , and that sort of offsets some of the issues that we have with not being able to use Bosch , which is unfortunate . We would love to do that , but we ca n’t .

Screen Rant : Ted Humphrey spoke about Maggie , and Maggie ’s role in Mickey ’s life sentence , describing her as kind of his compass north star . Is the show going to be leaning into more of that moral force ?

Headshot Of Becki Newton

Dailyn Rodriguez : Yeah , I do n’t think Mickey ever 100 % gets over Maggie , and I recollect that that ’s somebody that ’s always in the back of his judgement . And , I think that ’s why it ’s heavy for him to completely give himself over in other relationships , because in the back of his head . Maggie is always there . So , I opine very much I agree with him , and she is very much his north wizard .

And as the leger remain , I think of , Maggie ’s a really freehanded part in the Law of Innocence and also in the Reversal , which is another book we have yet to do . We have three entrust so far . I think Michael might be write another one , so she never goes away . She did a fiddling bit in the season two because she does n’t play a big part in that book , but Maggie never run away 100 % because she ’s always , I think , part of his psyche . And they have a fry together , so it ’s very hard for him to disentangle himself from that .

The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 adapts Michael Connelly ’s The Gods of Guilt , but the show also make some major changes to the root fabric .

![The Lincoln Lawyer](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/trailers/episode_poster/62799_Season 2.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=32&h=32&dpr=1.5)

Screen Rant : Hayley in the books seems further along in her education with the law schooling face of it versus being younger in the Netflix series . How do you guys plan on adapting that piece of it where she was in constabulary school in the book ?

Yeah , I think that ’s why we sort of had her already talking about taking college courses for season four , so we can try and labor her forward a small scrap faster . We do n’t know yet what we ’re going to do if we get a season 4 and 5 , how we ’re really cash in one’s chips to forge through that .

I think , in the end , because of the elbow room that we build these seasons and because we have these cliffhanger , I imagine it ’s really hard for us to ever get to a position where she ’s actually going to be a lawyer . I think we ’d have to be on the show . We ’d have to have 10 season of the show to really do it . So that ’s poppycock we ’re really go to have to adjust from the novel of the way that we break the seasons . For sure .

Screen Rant : Is there anything else you ’d wish to portion out with us aboutThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 4 ?

Dailyn Rodriguez : Oh my God . I wish I could , but I would just be giving away spoiler . I just really hope we get a time of year 4 because I reckon masses will love it . I think it ’ll be fun to see Mickey have to fight down himself and what goes into that , and it ’s very much all deal on deck . So , the season is much more sort of wrap around Mickey . Every time of year is about him making his case . But , he is his own client , so everything really is about Mickey . So , hopefully , we get to secern that news report . I think it ’s exciting .
